Cycle route information Hull to York
There are two signed Sustrans cycle routes between Hull and York, viz 65 and 66.
Of these, Route 65 the "White Rose" via the Transpennine Trail via Howden and Selby is recommended. It is almost flat which helps those carrying luggage. Also it passes close to the Cycle Show entrance at York Racecourse, some 2Km south of the City Centre.
The first part of the route through Hull is found on the Hull Cycling Map. Follow Route 66 from the Ferry terminal towards the City Centre, then join Route 65 at Drypool. This passes near the train station and continues west to Howden and Selby. The route leaves the map at square A8.
You arrive in Selby next to a bridge across the River Ouse. If you need toilets and a café, turn left across the bridge and straight ahead at the traffic lights just beyond. Soon a large Church (Selby Abbey) is seen on the right. At the next Traffic Lights, turn left for the bus station, where the café and toilets are found. Return to the bridge for the route northwards to York.
For York turn right at the bridge and ride along Barlby Road (cycle lanes). After 1 km you arrive at a roundabout. Take the first exit to Barlby and follow the blue York cycle route signs. After a few Km, you ride on a path next to the A19 road. This road takes the route of the old Selby to York railway (closed 1986).
In 2 Km, the path turns left. Join the road through Riccall village (shops). At the far end of this village, the road rejoins the A19. Turn left just before this, along a short road with houses. At the end, there is a cycle path alongside the A19, which shortly becomes an off-road path along the old railway to York. Now you travel through the model Solar System.
The route into York is found on the York Cycle Map. Find square C9 at the bottom of the map, for route 65 from Selby. The Cycle Show site is above, at squares C7 & D7 on the green space marked “Knavesmire” in the middle of York Racecourse.
As you approach York, follow the signs for the City Centre. You will cross the Racecourse track by two sandy strips. Beyond this turn left, and take the path alongside the Racecourse. Closer to York you will see the Cycle Show tents on the left.
The path climbs to the right and passes through a chicane barrier. Straight ahead, is a building with a tall clock tower. Turn immediately left towards the Racecourse and follow the road which then bears to the right. Pass between the building with the clock tower to your right, and the Racecourse on the left. At the end of this road, turn left and you have arrived!
