Downhill legend Steve Peat thrills local children in Sheffield

Good fortune came to kids from Parkwood Springs when local downhill legend Steve Peat turned up to give them a few tips and ride with them around their local track.

The event was kept low key to make sure that the locals were the only ones who would  enjoy the day.

The 2km track has been years in the making and was officially opened a year ago. Jon Dallow, of Sheffield City Council Woodlands Team, has co-ordinated the six-year long project with the help of CTC Education Officer Dan Cook's vision, bringing prime singletrack trails to the city centre.

It hasn’t been at all easy, but I have had a lot of help from many people along the way."

Cyclists have been taking part in a special protest in the Southwark. They lay on the ground in what is known as a 'die-in' in response to the death of 14 cyclists in the capital this year. VoR's Brendan Cole spoke to Ria Weston, a spokesperson for the national cycling charity, CTC.

Townley Park offers a stunning setting for a weekly programme of health rides that use a fleet of mountain bikes and adapted cycles for those who are less mobile.

Through the partnership work of CTC and Lancashire County Council, the Community Cycle Club Gateway Programme helped purchase a small fleet of specialist tricycles, now in regular service around the Park.

Lancashire Youth Challenge

A number of organisations working with young people in Lancaster came together with CTC to offer a life-changing cycling experience to a group of young people from deprived areas of the city.

Last winter, a programme of cycling activity took place through the colder months, including gym sessions, a mountain biking trip and advice sessions on fitness and nutrition. When the weather improved in spring, the programme switched to cycle training in the local area with a progressive set of rides in the Trough of Bowland, North Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The target for the group was a multi-day ride to Edinburgh in June 2013, made on a fleet of brand new road bikes purchased for the occasion.

A pleasant surprise on the north-east Chilterns Cycleway

Having spent much of the summer riding sections of the Chilterns Cycleway in the central Chilterns, it was time to venture further afield to see what the rest of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire had to offer.
Sundon Hills Country Park

The area covered by the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is actually split into two distinct sections by the M1 corridor and Luton - apparently these aren't considered to be beautiful bits of countryside. So I spend most of my time riding in the main block of the Chilterns through Buckinghamshire and west Hertfordshire.

Over 40 riders aged from eight to 58 took part in the Housedale hill climb event last weekend 16 November 2013. On the day, the weather was clear and cool with thankfully no need for waterproofs or de-icer, so it helped things run really well. Riders were set off in two-minute intervals, which is a bit different to the usual 1 minute gap. The organisers  thought for the first timers, it would be nice not to get caught on the way up!
