Photoshoot at Aston Hill

On Tuesday 24 July, I awoke to a bright and sunny day and could think of no better way to spend it than riding my bike. Thankfully, I had already been asked to ride around Aston Hill for a photoshoot

The purpose of the day was to get some up-to-date photos of mountain bikes in an amazing setting. So CTC's Senior Off-Road Officer Ian Warby  and I  teamed up with junior downhill rider, Josh Lowe, to pose on bikes in Aston Hill.

Avon Tyrrell's mountain bike facilities get even better

CTC MTB and Shoretrax Mountain Bike Trails have been working with the leading youth work charity UK Youth to further enhanced the off-road cycling facilities for young people and the local community at its Avon Tyrrell Activity Centre in the New Forest.

£8,000 raised at last summer's annual ‘Big Bike Bash’ and a recent £2,000 grant from the New Forest National Park Authority have been used to make the improvements.

Gearing up for Olympic cycle racing in Swindon

Swindon cyclists will be in the saddle and peddling the message to get on your bike in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

When the Games begin next month, Wharf Green is the place to be with all the action shown live on the Big Screen and an array of free sporting festivities for people to come and try. Some different 20 activities will be on offer between 28 July and 12 August – and cycling will take centre stage on Saturday 11 August.

Deans Community High School pupils meet Nigel Mansell

Pupils at Deans Community High School met the former Formula 1 star on 14 June but this time he was on two wheels instead of four. Nigel cycled through Livingston as part of a 1300 mile charity cycle ride from John O'Groats to Paris over 12 days, raising funds for Youth Charity UK Youth.

On his arrival at the school Nigel was greeted by pupils, parents and staff all keen to find out how his cycle through Scotland over the last three days had been. Amazingly his time north of the border was spent mostly cycling in the sunshine.

Larbert High School S1 Cycle Roadshow

Three hundred S1 pupils at Larbert High School tried out different cycling activities over three days to encourage more pupils to take up cycling and get involved in cycling activities. They also organised their first ever girls only mountain bike trip.

S1 pupils went cycling crazy at Larbert High School this term when they took part in this year’s Cycle road shows.

Although slightly cold, the days stayed dry and pupils had the chance to try out the school's assault course, riding Tandem bikes and tackling hills on mountain bikes. PC Imrie security stamped bikes that pupils brought along on the day and local bike recycling project Recyke-a-bike came along to teach pupils how to fix their bikes. All the pupils are to be congratulated on their effort and enthusiasm.

iXS European Downhill Cup

The iXS European Downhill Cup returns to Innerleithen, Scotland for the only UK round of Europe’s premier downhill series. Running over three days from 15—17 June, the World’s best downhill racers will pit their skills against each other at the spiritual home of the UK downhill scene.

The fun starts on Thursday 14 June at the Film Night in the Union Club at 19.15.   On Friday it’s practice for the riders and the Official iXS Cup Innerleithen Launch Party in the Traquair Arms, with all welcome from 20.00 to enjoy the disco and relax outdoors in the marquee to bask in the Scottish summer evening.

Our grandest ever prize draw - over £6000 worth of goodies awarded!

The 2012 CTC Grand Draw was the biggest ever, with over £6,000 in cash and prizes given away.

Team UK Youth meet Middleden Mountain Bike Club

Kirkcaldy based Mountain Bike Club met professional cycling team 'Team UK Youth' before they competed in the first round of the Halfords Tour Series. This was the first time the series has taken place in Scotland.

The Halfords Tour Series came to Scotland for the first time on Tuesday 15 May 2012 with a professional cycle race around Kirkcaldy town centre.

Team UK Youth are one of the twelve teams competing in the series and were founded by ex Formula 1 racing car driver Nigel Mansel.  They represent the work and values of UK Youth, the national Youth Charity and consortium partner of Bike Club.  

As part of their visit Bike Club Officer, Amy Hickman, arranged for the team to meet a local Bike Club group in Kirkcaldy, Middleden Mountain Bike Club, the night before the race.

Fife-based LinkLiving receives funding to help young people get on their bikes

LinkLiving has recently been awarded a grant of £2,000 to help start up a Bike Club for young people in Fife. On Tuesday 15 May, a number of staff and service users from LinkLiving visited Halfords Tour Series in Kirkcaldy to officially receive their grant and meet Team UK Youth.

LinkLiving has recently been awarded a grant of £2,000 to help start up a Bike Club for young people in Fife.

 The funding will allow LinkLiving, part of the Link Group of charitable RSLs and social enterprises, to purchase key cycling equipment such as bikes and helmets to encourage the young people they work with to get involved in cycling activities.
