Welcome to the May issue of ClubShorts, CTC’s e-newsletter for Member Groups. With nice weather and lots of exciting events to look forward to, let’s make it another classic summer of cycling. Best wishes, Julie Rand, Member Group Coordinator

Put on a Yellow Jersey ride
Everybody knows all about the Tour de France Grand Départ in Yorkshire in July. But how to take advantage of tour fever and inspire more people to ride bikes in your area? CTC has the answer: the CTC Yellow Jersey rides. Just send us details of the top three routes in your area (in GPX or KML format) – perhaps a shorter, easier ride, an intermediate one and a longer, harder one; and include a stop at a favourite café or teashop if possible.

No need to think up new routes as we’re sure you have some great ones already. We will then help you to publicise them as ‘CTC Yellow Jersey’ rides via a press release sent to your local media, thus attracting more people to your group. C’est formidable!

Put your hand up for a great day out
The Grand Départ is not the only cycling event to look forward to this summer. CTC is proud to be a partner organisation of the NSPCC Tour of England; L’Eroica Britannia; and Prudential RideLondon. We are looking for volunteers to come along and help in a variety of different roles, either as an individual or as a group. You can assist for a few hours or a whole day, depending on which role suits you. Refreshments and goody bags will be provided for all volunteers plus much more. If you would like to raise money for CTC through your own rides or events, you can now donate via CTC's JustGiving page, making it easier than ever!

Big up Bike Week
You might consider registering some Yellow Jersey-themed rides for Bike Week, which runs from 14-22 June. All events registered between now and the end of June 2014 will be covered by Bike Week insurance and organisers will also be entitled to download some free blank posters to promote their events. The theme this year is 'everyday cycling for everyone', meaning that all kinds of activities are suitable. So far, over 600 rides and events throughout the country have been registered with the site. Interestingly, Bike Week has been around since 1923 and was started by CTC - as this amazing film of an event in Hyde Park shows!

75 not out!
Chester and North Wales CTC is celebrating its 75th birthday this year with a series of anniversary rides and a President’s Tea on Sunday 8 June. Chair of CTC Council David Cox will be a guest at the event. Another part of the celebrations is the publication of an 80-page booklet ‘The Chain’, which details the club’s history from 1939 onwards. It is available to order for £5.00.

Can you solve the Meriden mystery?
Hundreds of riders turned out for this year’s Meriden Memorial service on Sunday 18 May to commemorate cyclists who gave their lives during the First World War. A British Pathé flim shows that hundreds of cyclists also attended the service in 1950, despite heavy rain. But what was the policeman saying to the woman in the crowd towards the end? It seemed to spark a mass exodus!

Spinning a yarn
CTC member and musician Richard Durrant also visited Meriden whilst taking part in his tour of the country by bicycle promoting his album ’Cycling Music’. He is compiling a video blog of the trip and filmed an interview with Chair of Council David Cox while he was there. Why not see where Richard is now and book some tickets?

Velo Ale 100x100.jpg
Ewe'd be mad not to
Is your group planning a trip to watch Le Tour in Yorkshire? Masham, which is on the route of Stage 1 on Saturday 5 July, is also home of the famous Black Sheep Brewery. The brewery has launched Velo Ale to commemorate the occasion. Healey Village Hall is two miles from Masham and is available for hire to cycling groups. It has a large hall for sleeping, a fully-equipped kitchen and ample bike parking, with reasonable rates. Contact Anne Gregg on 01765 689409 or by email if interested.

Stevenage and N. Herts 100x100.jpg
Super Stevenage celebrates silver
CTC Group of the Year 2013 Stevenage and Hertfordshire CTC is celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year with a programme of special events throughout Bike Week and beyond. They include: road riding challenges in June; a bicycle barbecue in July; off-road challenges in August; and a cyclists’ Curry Crawl in September. The end of summertime is marked with Emitremmus Desrever on 26 October.
