Welcome to the October issue of ClubShorts, CTC’s e-newsletter for Member Groups. I hope you are enjoying the beautiful autumn scenery from the saddle of your bikes. Minutes of the last Member Group Steering Group meeting held in London in September are now available. Julie, Member Group Coordinator

Return of the returns
We are in the middle of the AGM season, which runs from now until around 15 November. Your Group Secretary was sent an Annual Returns pack on 26 September to complete and return to CTC by Friday 13 December at the latest. Financial Returns packs were sent out in early September to all Member Group Treasurers. If your Group hasn’t received either pack, please contact myself or Finance Manager Diane Kelway-Bamber.  Many CTC Councillors and staff will be coming along to your AGMs to find out what you’ve been up to and to offer any support you might need in the future, so please raise any issues or concerns you may have with them. If you are a Group Secretary, please use the meeting to ask CTC members to sign up to our Road Justice petition, which closes at the end of October. Thanks.

Refreshing news
You may be aware of the current consultation into the way CTC presents itself to the world. So far, a remarkable 7,500 CTC members have fed into the process. No decisions have yet been made as to what, if any, changes to CTC's image will be made. CTC Chief Executive Gordon Seabright has written a short letter to CTC Member Group volunteers explaining the reasons behind the initiative and telling you what will happen next. Feedback on the exercise is welcome to either Gordon or Marketing Manager David Dowling.

Win a bike!
As part of the ongoing review of the services and benefits that CTC offers to its members, we're keen to learn more about you and your experience of the organisation. Complete a short survey and, thanks to our friends at Wiggle, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win a Tifosi CK7 Audax Veloce 2013 bike, worth over £989. The CK7 is fitted with Campagnolo, Veloce, Miche and Cinelli components and has mudguard and rear carrier braze-on bosses fitted as standard. An absolutely ideal bike for both beginner and specialist alike. So let us have your views and you could really impress your fellow riders on the next ride!

CTC couple enjoy a bumpy ride
CTC members Brian and Marijke Morris of Wokingham in Berkshire have a combined age of 159 years but still enjoy cycle touring in Europe. Brian, a former CTC Chair who suffered a serious stroke while cycling ten years ago, told the Reading Post that: “We enjoy cycling through the dunes up the coast of Holland. It’s quite bumpy in places but very pleasant. The only things you have to dodge are the rabbits.” The couple have previously ridden across NZ, America, Canada, Europe and Burma.

Let's talk!
How do you communicate with members of your Group? Do you send out a monthly printed magazine or perhaps a weekly e-newsletter? One Member Group is interested in knowing what other Groups do. We enjoy reading your magazines and e-newsletters too. So please send your paper communications to me at National Office and e-news to groups@ctc.org.uk. After reading, paper mags are sent to the CTC Archive at the Modern Records Office at Warwick University for future generations to enjoy.

Glasgow is go
The issue of publicity for Groups may be one of the items on the agenda at next year’s CTC AGM in Glasgow. We will be re-running the successful networking event, which took place in the morning before this year’s AGM in Guisborough. If you have any ideas for other topics we should cover, we’d love to hear them. The day after the AGM there will be the opportunity to have a spin around Glasgow’s new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, ahead of the Commonwealth Games there in 2014.

What's on the calendar for 2014?
Around now, many Member Groups will be thinking of organising events for next year's calendar. Don't forget we have a wealth of resources for event organisers such as entry forms, incident report forms, risk assessments and so on. You can register your event by downloading an event registration form and sending it to me for publication on our website. In addition, we now have advice on how to create online registrations and payments for your events.

A big hand for volunteers!
A recent survey has found that nine out of ten people who volunteer for local sports clubs do not believe that the Olympic Games has led to an upsurge in volunteers. It also found that 95 per cent of volunteers with community sports clubs are over 30. The poll has also revealed that the average amount of time that volunteers give to their clubs is six-and-a-half-hours a week, which is worth about £8 billion to the economy!
