Welcome to the August issue of ClubShorts, CTC’s e-newsletter for Member Groups. As autumn approaches, thoughts are turning to AGM season in October and November. Please contact me if you have any queries about what this involves. Til next time, happy riding. Julie Rand, Member Group Coordinator

Brand awareness
As you may know, CTC is celebrating its 135th anniversary this year. We are also beginning a consultation process on the future image of the organisation. This may mean a new way of describing ourselves and our services, a new look and feel, a new way of using our name - or even a new name altogether. Therefore we are asking as many of our members and supporters as possible to take part in a short survey. It takes just a few minutes and will help us build on what we have already achieved to create an even better future for cyclists and CTC. We particularly value the input of those active within local groups, so please do take part if you haven't done so already. Any additional comments about the survey should be directed to CTC Marketing Manager David Dowling.

Fall into line
With September nearly here, it must be AGM season just around the corner. Thank you to all the groups that have already let me know their AGM dates for publication in October- November ‘Cycle’ magazine. However, I still need the dates for quite a few groups so please let me have them as soon as possible. Don't forget to include the time, date and location of the meeting, which could be a very formal affair with sit-down lunch or just a get-together at a coffee shop whilst out on a ride. However, the meeting needs to be accessible to any CTC members who wish to attend and must be held between 15 October and 15 November every year. Annual Returns packs will be sent to Member Group secretaries in the autumn.

Learning to lead
Do you lead rides? Or do you coordinate the leaders for your group? If so, you might be interested in CTC’s Ride Manager course. They prepare confident cyclists to plan and lead group rides on quiet roads and off-road cycle tracks. The course runs twice this autumn, once in the south and once in the north of England. The dates are: Bromley on 16-17 September and Sheffield on 16-17 October.  The cost is £198 per person. For more information on CTC's training courses, contact Greg Woodford. You don’t have to go on a course to lead rides but you should read our new guidance for ride leaders and also for group riding. If you want some paper copies, do let me know

John Radford 100x100.jpg
Thinking of John
CTC Councillor and President of Huddersfield and District CTC John Radford remains in a coma after a crash a collision with a car whilst out cycling. He recently took part in CTC’s Road Justice campaign following another crash earlier this year. We wish John well on his long road to recovery. John’s progress can be followed via updates on CTC Calderdale’s Facebook page.

Yorkshire Bicycle Show 100x100.jpg
Yorkshire good
Although the York Cycle Show was cancelled this year, the Yorkshire Bicycle Show takes place in Leeds from 20-22 September 2013. CTC will be there and CTC members can buy two tickets for the price of one by quoting their CTC membership number. CTC Cycling Development Officer Ginny Leonard is running a series of rides to and from the event – if you would like to volunteer to help, please contact her. Thanks.

Departure lounges
Is your group planning a trip to next year’s Grand Départ of the Tour de France in Yorkshire? With reports of accommodation prices rising by 300% for the event, you may be interested in Buckden House, which is about half way round day one’s route.  It is ideal as a base for groups with a mixture of single/twin rooms and dormitories. Other accommodation can be found using CTC’s Cyclists Welcome – but do book early!

Forest dwellers from far and wide
The 39th CTC New Forest Cycling Week was, as ever, a great success. There was a wide mix of riders and CTC East Sussex and Chippenham Wheelers both brought big contingents. Others came from Wales, Scotland, Denmark and even Malaysia! The dates for next year's rally will are yet to be confirmed but will be posted on CTC'S list of rallies for 2014.

The colour wheel
Many riders think their beloved cycles are as precious as works of art. Painter Mark Jones has turned iconic brands such as Hetchins into real art works in his amazing collection 'Still Life Cycle' - in which the machines are depicted alongside the essential cakes and cups of tea! As well as the originals, the images can be bought as prints and greeting cards. Cyclist Mark says his work reflects “a passion for bright colours, simple pattern and bold forms.”
