Pfizer UK Foundation and CTC in partnership
A successful bid for funds from the Pfizer Foundation UK resulted in the award of £47,500 to CTC. This allowed the formation of a project team to work in the Leeds Bradford area., and lead efforts to establish a 'cycling for health' intervention scheme with local area health professionals.

Supported by the Pfizer UK Foundation (an initiative of Pfizer Limited), The CTC led project is targeting health inequalities within the resident South Asian population, focusing on those suffering from diabetes and coronary heart disease.

Participants in the scheme are being challenged to assess their wellbeing, introducing cycling as a means of physical activity alongside recommended alterations to their current lifestyle.

Local health professionals are ensuring appropriate participation, and with an evaluation being conducted by Leeds Metropolitan University, the partnership with Pfizer and CTC aims to establish the impact of cycling as an intervention measure.

CTC project officer Ginny Leonard, who is co-ordinating the project, hopes to see definitive results from the study as to how cycling can assist with the long term symptoms and management of diabetes and coronary heart disease.

By focusing on a community for whom it is well documented that they are at a higher risk of inactivity, we are able to record changes indicating health benefits associated with cycling. We hope to create a widely recognised model to enable health improvements through cycling.

If you would like to be involved in the project or would like more information on cycling in West Yorkshire please contact Ginny Leonard on 07717 663697 or e-mail ginny.leonard@ctc.org.uk
