Many people have continued cycling in their learning groups many months after their courses finish, which has created a growing cycling scene for older people in the area.
The courses are designed to be a gentle introduction to cycling, whether you have never ridden a bike before or haven’t ridden one for many years. The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment and the atmosphere is very relaxed with like-minded individuals. Taking place in a traffic free environment to start with, the pace of the course is tailored to suit the individual’s needs gradually increasing the amount of cycling and skills each week.
Each course runs over an eight week period with sessions every Saturday morning (10am-12pm) starting on the County Ground Athletics Track and gently progresses to roads and streets. There is no pressure on participants to venture out but most end up doing so. Some course graduates have even gone on to receive ride leader training so they can continue their group rides with other participants.
The tutors were great, really encouraging and good fun
“I really enjoyed my time on the Cycling course considering I was one of those who was unable to cycle at the start”, says Suz, a participant on a recent course. “On our last day we cycled all the way to Nightingale Woods which to me was amazing, nearly 13 miles! The tutors were great, really encouraging and good fun and the best bit for me was one Saturday I went on a bike ride with my children.”
Anna Cipullo, CTC Cycle Champion for Swindon and course organiser takes up the story: “The courses have been so well received, it’s incredible, and cycling for older people has really taken off in Swindon. It’s great to hear from previous course attendees that tell me what they’ve been up to on their bikes since learning to cycle, which is why we really wanted to put more courses on this year.”
