CTC launch #Funding4Cycling

Cycling needs long-term investment from the Government
Delayed plans for cycling growth suggest lack of Government commitment and leadership, so CTC is asking all cyclists join them in telling the Chancellor to provide funding for cycling.

CTC, the national cycling charity, describes the Government’s inability to deliver the long awaited Cycling and Walking Delivery Plan (CWDP) as “slow puncturing”, as it launches a #Funding4Cycling campaign, calling for consistent long-term investment to "Get Britain Cycling".

The Government’s cycling policy is like a bike with a slow puncture: it’s totally deflated and failing to make progress. Long-term annual funding of at least £10 per person is the repair kit needed to get it rolling again.

"Officials at the Department for Transport clearly understand the measures needed for cycling to become a normal activity for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. However, that's only going to happen if ministers and all relevant departments – including the Treasury – can agree on a plan and the funding needed to deliver it.”

Paul Tuohy
CTC Chief Executive

The Government promised a Cycling Delivery Plan in the autumn of 2013 following the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group’s ‘Get Britain Cycling’ report. However, no plan has yet been published and CTC sees the delay as a sign that funding for cycling has not been agreed. CTC believes that for the Prime Minister’s “cycling revolution” to happen, there needs to be consistent long-term funding of at least £10 per head annually.

CTC’s #Funding4Cycling campaign calls on cyclists and supporters to make the case for investment in cycling to HM Treasury, which is currently seeking public submissions ahead of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement. CTC has made this easy to do via www.funding4cycling.org.uk. Responses need to be in by 17 October and the Autumn Statement itself will be made on 03 December.
