Safe Working Practice: Trail Checking

This course helps you employ the protocols and best practice techniques to undertake, record and verify mtb trail checks of marked and wild trails.
Making notes is a crucial part of checking trails
Key Content: 

This unique course covers the principles and application of checking mtb trails as part of good practice trail and land management.  It includes:

  • Why trail check? an understanding of responsibilities and litigation
  • Recording protocols, tools and techniques
  • Three methods of trail checking and how you rotate them
  • What to look for on the trail: corridor; surfacing; visibility; signage
  • Categorising repairs
  • Identifying locations needing repairs
  • Management and verification requirements

This course also leads to the Volunteer Trail Repair Co-ordinator course which looks at maintaining mtb trails and liaising between volunteers, dig days and land owners / managers.

Course outcomes: 

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Set up systems of work for trail checks
  • Implement lone-working procedures
  • Check trails for land managers
  • Identify locations that need immediate and future amendment
