Success for local campaigners in Wendover
This came after years of hard work and a final ferocious fight from local people and cycling campaigners, including local CTC volunteers, to ensure the parish council kept their promise of investment in cycling in the area.
Peter Hardy, Cabinet Member for Buckinghamshire County Council opened the route with a celebratory bike ride by children from local schools. An impressive swell of public support saw the route being saved after a last minute attempt to prevent £300,000 of investment in the local town, which is already suffering from car congestion and parking problems.
The cycle route intersects with the Chilterns Cycleway, a major project which CTC helped initiate in 2010.
"Getting more people onto their bikes is totally in line with national and local government policy and will help to keep Wendover as beautiful as it is now" says campaigner Laura Ferguson.
Local cyclist Matthew Can said about the route "It will provide a safe route for all the kids on their way to school and will help integrate the community at Princess Mary Gate to Wendover and the facilities in the village.“Hopefully it’ll be the first of many more such projects: “We need more cycle routes across the area.”
