The New Forest Gridiron comes of age

You never know what wildlife you'll see in the New Forest!
Last year, CTC Wessex's Gridiron in the New Forest in Dorset celebrated its 21st birthday, and this year's event took place on Sunday 12 October. The 100km route used mainly minor forest roads and took in many of the area's cattle grids, hence the name.

The New Forest ‘Commoners’ have the right to graze their animals in the forest and let them roam free. The cattle grids are there to keep them in the forest but not off the roads. If cattle, ponies, donkeys or pigs decide to cross the road, they will!

The event always takes place on the second Sunday in October, a time when the forest is at its stunning best. The route twists and turns in places and goes straight across open heath in others, with amazing views to the Isle of Wight and occasional glimpses of the sea.

Around 800 riders of all ages and types took part in this year's Gridiron, which was sold out. The organisers took the decision to change this year's route at short notice to avoid a potential clash with another cycling event on the same day, although the two groups of cyclists shared the road, albeit in opposite directions for a short distance.  The event was deemed a great success, with co-operation by all road users, both two-wheeled and four-legged!

If you would like to explore the delights of the New Forest by bike, CTC Wessex has rides for all abilities throughout the year, whilst the CTC New Forest Cycling Week in late July is an ideal opportunity for families, solo riders and other groups to enjoy the area in great company.
