First 'graduate' from CTC Adult Cycle Training Scheme in Plymouth
This week, Elaine Norman, the first participant in CTC's Adult Cycle Training Scheme, run in partnership with Plymouth City Council, completed her Level 1 National Cycle Training Standards Course and is keen to get out and about by bicycle in Plymouth.

Government backs initiative to encourage cycling to work
With the roads getting ever more clogged with motorised traffic and the population getting fatter, the government is keen to encourage employees to cycle to work. Businesses that want to encourage it too can now sign up to 'businesscycle', a scheme that replaces the Cycle to Work Guarantee.

Proposed new junction designs show little sign of innovation
Transport for London has just released proposed new junction designs to improve conditions for cyclists. These schemes involve very minor changes to the road layouts, which in themselves may make conditions slightly easier but they show little sign of innovative or bold thinking.

Beam me up Scotty! Do 'laser beam' cycle lanes help make you safe?
A recent Guardian Bike Blog discussed the effects of a new 'safety' device: 'TheXfire.com - Bike Lane Laser Safety Lighting System' projects a set of red lines around your bike to give the illusion of a cycle lane, the idea being to encourage drivers to give you more space when overtaking.

Call for justice review comes just as Crown Prosecution Guidance consults
This week British Cycling increased pressure on the Government to review the way criminal justice treats road crash victims, securing an agreement to meet and discuss the issue. Meanwhile the Crown Prosecution Service are consulting on their guidance for prosecuting bad driving.

A thousand cyclists take to the trails at the Dalby Forest open day
Dalby Bike Barn's open day on 13 October showcased a range of CTC taster courses and activites at our community hub in Dalby Forest. CTC teamed up with PACE and the Forestry Commission to offer visitors an inspiring day of both MTB and road cycling.

New MTB trails at Beecraigs Country Park
Beecraigs is a small country park with big potential. Mountain bikers have been using the park for many years, so it was inevitable that a time would come when some upgrades and maintenance to the existing network of trails would be required - so they called in CTC's Ian Warby.

Labour promises push on cycling
Maria Eagle MP, the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, has endorsed the Times manifesto on cycling and promised to implement its demands in full. The statement follows last week's commitment at the Liberal Democrat conference calling for widespread 20 mph speed limits.

Government THINK! cycling campaign misses the bigger picture
A new government advertising campaign on cycle safety has been launched, although with just £80,000 behind it, it's unlikely to have any discernable effect on driver behaviour. Worse still, the campaign includes some poor advice to drivers on overtaking.
