About this project

Bike Rescue has been established for seven years, and has a permanent home in at The Hub Station in York City Centre, in a building we raised the funding to convert from a derelict shell.  We have recycled about 15,000 bikes so far, Our bikes are refurbished to a high standard often with new wheels and drive train.

We offer training linked to Velotech qualifications, and are currently expanding to offer fulltime apprenticeships. We are also in the process of converting to a charity.  We have regular volunteers and placements and these places are in high demand.

We work with two prisons and the probation service in Yorkshire, You can visit the warehouse Tues to Sat, and the Hub Station Mon- Sat

Accept bikes donated by the public

Bikes can be dropped at:

  •  Hub Station   7.30-6pm Mon-Fri   9-5 Sat
  •  Walmgate Warehouse  Tue- Sat 10-4pm Thursday late night volunteering until 8pm in summer

Collection service for donated bikes

Yes, though outside York we would have to try to wait until we were going in that direction

What happens to the reconditioned bikes?

All bikes are accepted, they are assessed for viability in terms of refurbishment, seat post checked; bottom bracket checked, then they are sorted and stored.

Those that cannot be refurbished are stripped for parts, usually by volunteers

We have 2 mechanics and two trainees whenever possible refurbishing bikes, aiming to produce two bikes a day. The bikes are resold to fund the project, or donated to individuals and organisations.

Parts are sorted and kept for use on our bikes or to sell to the public, we keep some rare or old parts and refurbish S/A hubs

Reconditioned bikes for sale

Yes, either from the Hub Station or from the Warehouse, some bikes are for sale ‘sold as seen’ for DIY projects

We keep a collection of historical bikes
