Southampton CTC

Southampton CTC is the local CTC group for the area covering Southampton, Romsey, Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford and Waterside, and we regularly welcome riders from outside this area. We offer a range of cycle rides and also organise special events throughout the year. We also campaign locally for better cycle facilities.

About The Group

Who we are and what we do

The CTC is the national cycling charity; it inspires and helps people to cycle and keep cycling. It encourages all types of cycling, on the road or off it.  It supports you if you already ride, or would like to ride, to work or school, for health, touring, sport and leisure – or just because it’s fun. Members of Southampton CTC range from those who like to ride 10-20 miles to those who ride Sportifs and events of over 1000km. Some members also enjoy touring in the UK and abroad.

Southampton CTC is the local CTC group for the area, although we regularly welcome riders from outside this area. It offers a range of cycle rides, and also puts on open challenge events throughout the year.  It also campaigns locally for better cycle facilities.

What you need:

Bike: all you need is a roadworthy bike. You’ll find life a lot easier on a reasonably lightweight road or touring bike rather than a heavy bike mountain bike with knobbly tyres. Don’t be put off trying one of our rides because you think you don’t have the right bike. We can advise on how you can adapt your existing bike and provide expert advice if you want to buy a new one.

Clothing: Specialist clothing and a helmet are optional. A light, waterproof jacket is almost essential for the British climate. Otherwise just bring something to drink, a spare inner tube and tyre levers and lights for winter and evening rides. Rides stop for refreshments at regular intervals but you may like to pack a cereal bar or similar as emergency rations.

About our rides

Our rides range from short, easy rides suitable for novice cyclists to more challenging rides that are longer and faster. We run weekly Saturday and Sunday rides, weekday evening rides in the summer and Wednesday social night in the clubroom. Some of our rides are joint with Winchester CTC. Most rides are on-road but we occasionally venture off-road, especially in the drier summer months.

Saturday rides start from Romsey and are known locally as the ‘Hares and Tortoises cycle group’. On the 1st Saturday of each month we have an all-day ride which starts at 10 am. On the 3rd Saturday we have a “Tea ride” which starts at 1.30 pm from November to March and 2 pm from April to October. The pace is a gentle 8-10 mph and no-one gets left behind!

Sunday rides have four different start points: Redbridge, Romsey, Chilworth and West End, with a 9 am start time. We stop for mid-morning coffee and lunch in a country pub. With a mid- afternoon tea stop we aim to return home for 4- 5 pm.There is a half-day option for those who prefer to be back home for lunch. We usually cover 50-70 miles at a modest pace of around 12 mph. No-one gets left behind!

Southampton CTC Clubroom meets every Wednesday 8.00-10.00 pm at Chilworth Community Centre, Fowlers Walk (behind the church, grid reference OS 185 GR SU407186). These are social occasions, sometimes featuring slide shows, talks, maintenance evenings, wine and cheese evenings, etc. We also hold occasional Saturday maintenance mornings at the clubroom, designed to give people the confidence to deal with routine problems like punctures, gear and brake adjustment, etc. These are usually arranged to coincide with a Hares & Tortoises tea ride in the afternoon.

Joining a CTC ride, You do not have to be a member of CTC to come on the rides. Feel free to come on three or four rides and see if it works for you. After that we encourage you to join as the benefits of membership, particularly the insurance and discounts, are well worth the subscription.
