Give it a Spin - Live!@New Scene, Chester

Give it a spin is an inclusive cycling opportunity operating through Live! Cheshire and based at New Scene Youth Centre in Chester. The centre is a CTC affiliated, group that provides people of all abilities with the chance to enjoy cycling in a supportive and comfortable setting, It is easy to take part and you can just come along on a drop in basis. The sessional staff will be happy to discuss any needs you or the person you care for may have, match you with a potentially suitable cycle and then you can try it out. If you do not feel that cycle is suitable, then you will be able to try another. We are working to enable cycling and will try out hardest to match people to a bike they can use.

The current situation is that there is more capacity in the afternoon session and calling ahead to inform the centre of group attendance is recommended.

We are looking at the possibility of running extra sessions so if you are involved in or know of a group or individual that could benefit from being able to access the cycles on a different day, please contact us with further details.

The current co-ordinator for the sessions is Mike Jones and he is at New Scene on Mondays. However it is best to contact the Live! staff in the first instance and let them know: your name, a contact number or email, how many participants, times that you wish to come along and any additional, alternative days that may be useful for you or your group so they can think about future provision.

About our rides

The sessions currently run on a Monday from 10 until 3 and are on a drop in basis but booking is advised.- the afternoon session is the least busy currently.

The riding takes place in a park setting with a circular tarmac route where participants can be seen clearly all the way round. There is an undercover veranda and some seating available as part of the main building. Inside the building there is a café space, with plenty of seating, where coffee, tea, soup and cake are available at a modest price. Hiring a bike currently cost £3 for as long as required. If the participant wishes to try out different bikes during the session they are free to do so.

We have created a flyer to help you remember the details and so you can help with promoting the centre by printing it off and putting it up where it would be useful for people that could benefit from accessing the cycles. Or if you can, circulate the flyer to any relevant organisations, groups, families or individuals in the area. This can be done by opening and saving it then attaching it to email if prefer.

The Friends of Give it a Spin would like to start some led rides along the local Greenway for those people that are able and can progress to rides of different, suitable distances - if you are interested in helping with led rides or would like to take part in led rides yourself, or for your clients or your group, please contact the Friends of Give it a Spin or the centre.

There are may different cycles available and we have created a list with pictures of the available cycles with more details of barriers they could help to overcome and some suggestions about their suitability for potential participants' needs. We do have a good range of cycles here but if you feel that none of the bikes that we have are suitable, give us a call and we will be happy to discuss your needs and see if we can help. Please be aware that not all bikes are always available - sometimes they are awaiting repair.

There are many volunteering opportunities at the centre and contact the community group or the centre if you are interested in helping out in any way
