Wheels for All - Bolton

Wheels for All in Bolton offers adaptive cycle sessions for ages 4 years and up, through Bolton Arena in Horwich and Bolton Council at Leverhulme Sports centre. Both centres run at athletics tracks and are outdoor sessions only. They were established with the help of Cycling Projects through the Wheels for All Programme and have been running since 2009. Wheels for All is a nationally recognised programme that offers cycling opportunities to people with additional needs by giving access to adaptive cycles in a supportive environment. The centres are both CTC affiliated, groups that provide people of all abilities with the chance to enjoy cycling in a supportive and comfortable setting. It is easy to take part and you can just come along on a drop in basis or contact the centres to ask about pre- booked sessions. There are sessions that run through the school holidays as well.

We are working to enable cycling and where possible will match people to a bike they can use if we have something suitable in our fleet at either Leverhulme or the Arena. We happy to discuss any needs you or the person you care for may have and try to match you with a potentially suitable cycle. If you do not feel that cycle is suitable, then you will be able to try another. Please do take a look at the information about the cycles available at both centres and give us a call to discuss your needs if you have any further questions.

If its your first visit, call the sessional leads to confirm the activity is running.

Contacting us to let us know about group attendance is recommended so we can make sure there are sufficient cycles and supporters on hand to make your visit enjoyable.

We currently work with both adult and child participants and are working hard to increase the children’s fleet at the Arena so we can accommodate more children that have additional needs including local SEN schools or other educational establishments with younger students. So we are looking for more children’s cycles – trikes, quads, hand cycles and child-backed tandems. If you have one to donate or know of someone that has one they could donate, please do contact the Arena and let them know. We are always interested in fundraising ideas and any opportunities to apply for grants or awards to support the work we do, so let us know if you are aware of any or if you would like to help us to raise funds.

About our rides

Both centres run outdoor sessions on athletics tracks. Leverhulme operates all year round whereas the Arena runs from March to October.  They both have sessions on Thursdays at 10. The Arena has one on Saturday mornings and Leverhulme on Wednesday evenings. Both centres offer access to the adaptive cycles during the school holidays so families can take part. All sessions are supported and there is a trained member of staff on hand to help you choose the right cycle and enjoy your ride.

We have created a flyer to help you remember the details and so you can help with promoting the centre by printing it off and putting it up where it would be useful for people that could benefit from accessing the cycles. Or if you can, circulate the flyer to any relevant organisations, groups, families or individuals in the area. This can be done by opening and saving it then attaching it to email if prefer.

There is a wider variety of cycles at Leverhulme but most needs can be covered by the cycles at the Arena but if you feel that none of the bikes that we have are suitable, give us a call and we will be happy to discuss your needs and see if we can help. Please be aware that not all bikes are always available - sometimes they are awaiting repair.

There are many volunteering opportunities both on the supporting body, the Bolton Disability Sport Association and at the centres themselves, contact us if you are interested in helping out in any way at either the Arena or Leverhulme.

We are really in need of help with supporting the centres through the BDSA and with fundraising to make some improvements to the site, storage and to create attractive club rooms near the tracks so that people taking part have somewhere to sit, socialise and maybe enjoy a hot drink.
