The Adult Cycle Scheme, part of Plymouth City Council's 'Plymotion' initiative, to promote healthy, sustainable travel choices, offers free cycle training, a bike safety check and guided rides to encourage people to switch to bicycles for urban journeys, such as commuting to work or popping down to the shops.

Elaine had never been on a bicycle, but was motivated by a desire to get fit, save money and have fun. After her final session with CTC Cycling Development Officer, Brett Nicolle, she said, "After this training I really feel like I can ride a bike, I really feel like a cyclist!"

Elaine is hoping to be able to ride to her local slimming classes, a journey she normally does by car, but she admitted it makes a lot more sense to go by bike. She is determined to keep improving and aims to take more cycle training with qualified local instructors and has an ambition to ride the Plym Valley Trail and Drakes Trail, part of National Cycle Route 27 by the summer.

Free cycle training is available to anyone 16 or over who lives, works or studies in Plymouth. To find out more, contact the CTC Cycling Development Officer, Brett Nicolle, on 01752 307704 or email 'cycling@plymouth.gov.uk'
