Surrey Hills Logo.jpg

The Surrey Hills,  encompassing the ridge of the North Downs from Oxshott to Farnham and the greensand hills down to the Sussex border, was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1958, giving it the same conservation status as a National Park.

AONB designation recognises the beauty of the landscape and the Surrey Hills Board ensures that it is properly conserved and managed for future generations to enjoy. It aims to increase the understanding and enjoyment by the public of the special qualities of the area of outstanding natural beauty,

The Board includes Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Tandridge and Waverley Borough Councils and Surrey County Council, Natural England, the National Trust, National Farmers Union, Country Land and Business Association, Surrey Wildlife Trust, CPRE and the Surrey County Association of Parish and Town Councils.  The Surrey Hills Partnership is an advisory forum that supports and scrutinises the work of the Board.

News
Barry Knows Best, or BKB, as the Hurtwood trail is known to the mountain bikers who love its steep cliff face and knotted roots, is soon going to be a lot safer for everyone. Now Barry Knows Better.

A poll of mountain bikers on tracks around Leith Hill has reinforced the findings of an earlier survey of the Hurtwood. Most bikers are local, and they use the steep hills regularly for a couple of hours of leisure and strenuous exercise.

Involving mountain bikers in a project to improve trails and protect the historic landscape of the Hurtwood at Holmbury and Pitch Hills has proved such a success that it is being rolled out across the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
