There has never been a better time to get on your bike. Colchester Cycle Champions is a BIG Lottery-funded initiative supported by Colchester Borough Council and working with Cycle Colchester to get more people enjoying cycling. Take a look below at the cycling fun we have had and see what’s coming up.
Come on our new summer evening cycle ride every Tuesday
We’ve started a nice gentle cycle ride every Tuesday 6.30pm from Leisure World front reception. The cycle ride is for an hour at a gentle pace which gives us just enough time to find a country pub and return back. Our first outing was to the Shepherd and Dog in Langham and this week we’re going to Copford. Not too far!
New cyclist Sandra was overjoyed at the chance to get out on a bike. She told me: “I was a bit nervous of cycling a bit further but we went nice and slowly and enjoyed a beautiful summer’s evening. I can’t believe how easy I found it, after years of not getting on a bike”. Please tell us if you would like to come along.
Cycle training for us grown ups
Do you want to get on a bike but aren’t too confident? Are your cycle skills a bit rusty? Cycle Champions is here to help and we want you to enjoy cycling. We’ve been helping to put a great big smile on loads of adults this spring and summer. We’ve got more sessions coming up.
What we’re doing
Wednesday cycle ride — 11am from Leisure World
Join our relaxed traffic-free cycle group as we head for the Wivenhoe Trail or to Highwoods or wherever takes our fancy. All abilities welcome and bikes available. And we always stop for a cup of tea! Enjoy the photos and video clips.
Tuesday summer evening ride — 6.30pm from Leisure World
We’ve just started a regular ride to complement the daytime ride for those that can’t get away in the daytime.
Monday cycling with NHS North-East Essex
We have a great group. See the inspiring pictures and video.
CTC District Association ride
Thursdays 7.15pm, outside Tenpin, Leisure World; social ride to a village pub, led by Pete Finch (Suffolk DA), lasting two hours. Don’t forget your lights!
University Challenge
Lots of activities for students and staff at the University of Essex such as:
- Re~Cycle secondhand bike sale
- Dr Bike surgery outside the library, Wednesdays 12noon–3pm and Fridays 9am–3pm (during term time)

What we’ve done
Greenstead Cycle and Seek
It was another glorious day for families to discover the lovely nooks and crannies of Greenstead and Salary Brook by bike. See the report and pictures.
Pedalicious Greenstead Fun Day
Cycling proved a very popular stall with dozens of people attracted to the pedal-powered super-smoothie maker and the challenging skills course. See the report and pictures.
Colchester Rovers Open Grass Track Day
Colchester Rovers put on a full programme of cycle races and activities for all ages and cycles. On a blistering hot day we had around a hundred riders racing against each others. See the report and pictures.
Colchester Workplace Cycle Challenge
Colchester’s Cycle Challenge was a roaring success! We got an amazing 874 people cycling over 40,000 miles in total over two weeks. Congratulations to everybody who took part. See the report and pictures.
