Theresa moved to Rotherham in 1991, married Richard, also an active CTC member, two years later and set up home in Rotherham. In the first years of their marriage, Richard and Theresa help set up and involved themselves with the Rotherham Cycle Campaign Group lobbying the local Council for better facilities for cyclists in the town. They spearheaded many Council backed cycling projects in Rotherham including Introduction rides for families and easy riders using canal towpaths that they needed to acquire British Waterways cycling permits to gain access.
Both Richard and Theresa were actively involved with riding and organising audax events. They manned the night feeding station on the 1300 km London-Edinburgh-London AUK event and took over, organised and ran a 600 km audax event for many years.
Theresa used her cycling organisational skills for charitable purposes too; she arranged an event at a Doncaster Primary School that involved getting mothers cycling to raise money for school equipment. She also cycled on many British Heart Foundation rides raising money for research into heart decease. Richard had a lifelong heart condition so the charity had a significant meaning to Theresa.
Within the CTC, Theresa was especially active. She was the District Association Secretary for South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire (now Sheffield District Member Group) for fifteen years from 1997. In this time she arranged hostel weekends in Lincolnshire and barbeques at her home to raise money for the local DA. She attended York Rally with Richard and her young family every year, arriving a day early, to set up camp and help the organisers prepare and set up for the weekend’s events.
Tragically in spring 2009, Richard died of heart failure whilst cycling home from work in Sheffield at the premature age of fifty. Theresa was left with two very young children to bring up alone, David was at primary school and Elizabeth was at pre-school nursery. As well as this she still had her job to uphold at a Doncaster Primary School. Despite this she continued as Member Group Secretary for two years before handing over the role in 2011.
Along with her friend Bill Hutchinson, Theresa now arranges easy/family rides in the Rotherham area and sits on the Sheffield District CTC Committee as the Rotherham representative. She has been and continues to be a huge credit to our club in the Sheffield District area, is an inspiration to us all and fully deserves the Certificate of Merit.
