The Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2014 will take place in Yorkshire. CTC backed 'Le Bid' in the summer and is delighted that part of the 101st race will be in Leeds where CTC is involved in community outreach work.

Seven years after the Tour last came to Britain, the city of Leeds will host the start of the 2014 Tour de France.

Race organisers have confirmed the Tour will start in Yorkshire on 5-6 July 2014 and then it will head south to London for the third stage.

The race last came to the UK in 2007, when two million people came out to watch the prologue and a road stage from London to Canterbury.

Yorkshire is amazing place to ride and I'm sure the fact that the Tour de France is coming to Leeds, will mean more and more people will be inspired to cycle around this beautiful part of the world."

In July, CTC, along with Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish, backed 'Le Bid' for Yorkshire. CTC and Cycling Time Trials were the only cycling organisations to become official Bid Supporters.

At the time, CTC Chief Executive Gordon Seabright wrote: "We are proud of our strong links to Yorkshire, as CTC was founded in Harrogate in 1878 and is the UK's oldest and largest cycling organisation. We recognise the benefits to both the economy and cycling throughout the UK from your bid, and look forward to working  to bring the Tour de France to Yorkshire."

Mark Cavendish said: "My Mum is from Yorkshire so I'm proud to be backing the Yorkshire bid! The county would provide a stunning backdrop to the Tour as well as a real test for the competitors, I have fond memories of holidaying in Yorkshire, a lot of my family still live there and it would be fantastic if the world's greatest cycle race could come to Yorkshire, I'm sure it would host a stunning Grand Départ."

The details of this Grand Départ and the stages it will include will be revealed at a press conference that will take place on Thursday 17 January 2013, in two phases, in both Leeds and Paris.

CTC deliver 'go:cycling' a project in West Yorkshire that provides free adult cycle training. It also offers maintenance courses and led rides in the area.
