CTC Trainer: Sally Berry
- Developed 'ground up' principles for school ski trips in Devon and for the English Ski Council;
- Deeply believes that innovation should be the norm;
- Appreciates the gender imbalance in cycling and challenges Dan Cook to do stuff about it!
As a teacher, Sally took all kinds of young people into the outdoors whenever an opportunity arose. She says she revelled in the achievement and growth that, given good leadership, she saw developing in front of her. That in turn led to Sally providing leadership training for others.
Leadership is Sally’s specialist area and together with Phil Berry, she now runs her own company Trekwild, training people to lead others in mountain biking as well as hill walking, remote camping, remote first aid, skiing and aspects of trip organisation.
Sally believes mountain bike leader training, particularly the CTC way, shares a lot of skills and ideas with other disciplines; this transference has both informed and enhanced her leadership in other areas.
Women’s mountain biking, like all outdoor activities, is affected by lots of barriers, perceived and very real. Sally says it’s been her privilege to help a number of women starting out on that path, developing skills and confidence and raising their own understanding of and aspirations in mountain biking.
