English Coastal Access

ctc-coast-postcard.jpg

The coast should be a perfect place to cycle, but we’re only allowed to cycle on 7% of England's coastline.

The Government wants to create an ‘access corridor’ around the entire English coastline as part of its draft Marine Bill, currently being considered by Parliament.  However the proposals currently benefit walkers - cyclists and other non-motorised users have been left out. CTC recognises that access to the coast will not be appropriate in all locations, but wants the Bill to include a duty for local authorities to consider coastal cycle access.

Campaign update

Thank you to everyone who responded to our request for responses to the Government's call for evidence of "demand and opportunities for coastal cycling". Over 1,500 of you sent in submissions suggesting places where you would like to be able to cycle along the coast, and we sent these to the Government along with our consultation response.

Meanwhile CTC local campaigners in are still trying to get Christchurch Council in Dorset to remove what they believe are some illegal signs banning cycling from a wide section of sea-front Promenade. There is in fact no legal order in force banning cycling, yet in practice these signs force cyclists onto two very busy roads with no cycle facilities. A duty to consider cycling at this type of location would force Councils to have reasonable grounds for prohibiting cycling at this type of location.
