Ahead of this weekend's stages of the Giro d'Italia in Northern Ireland, CTC cycle instructor and trainer Tim Edgar sampled the route with Stephen Roche - Ireland's only Giro winner.

It is a big weekend for cycling in Northern Ireland as 'The Grande Partenza' - or 'Big Start' - of the Giro d’Italia will take place over three days from 9-11 May 2014. 200 elite cyclists will ride around Belfast city centre on Day 1 before moving on to the dramatic Causeway Coast and Armagh the following day before finally leaving the province and heading south to Dublin on Day 3.

Belfast to honour Dunlop and Hume at Giro Celebration

A minister pledges to make the Belfast start of the Giro "worthy of Italian cycling tradition", while ignoring the city's own extraordinary contribution to cycling history.

Note: Since the publication of our article, Belfast City Council has confirmed they will be supplying a plaque for Dunlop and Hume to be unveiled by the Lord Mayor along with local school children and cyclists at the site before the Giro passes on route.

The Giro d'Italia starts in Belfast this year and everyone is buzzing about the three days of pre-race celebrations in Belfast. The media is full of quotes about how the retailers, hotels, sponsors will make the most out of the event.
