With the help of CTC, Hereford Pedicabs and Pedicargo are launching an innovative community cargo bike share scheme in the St James area of Hereford. If successful, this type of scheme could be rolled out in other towns and cities.

Cargo bikes, really useful

The community cargo bike sharing scheme is the brainchild of Will Vaughan and his business partner Ben Matthews of Hereford Pedicabs and Pedicargo. CTC, as part of its work within the EU Cycle Logistics project, has part funded the scheme which will provide a cargo carrying bike for residents in the St James Area of Hereford.

For a small access fee, residents will be able to book online for access to a maintained cargo bike which is perfect for the school run, popping to the shops or carrying tools to the allotment.

The duo are keen to run a slick trial project, and this includes development of the software and also getting an idea of just how big a community you need in order to make it work. The trial scheme currently has twenty participants signed up.

Other towns and cities have expressed an interest in hosting a scheme and if the trial is successful, it could be replicated throughout the UK.

Over 17,000 people saw info we sent out and we had responses from people all over the world. 5 community groups already want us to input a scheme for them when we are up and running and people from lots of major cities in the UK and abroad have welcomed the idea."

Cargo bikes are typically quite difficult to store and could also be prohibitively expensive for many people. Schemes like this are a great way of bringing the benefits of cargo cycling to many people in an incredibly cost effective way.
