Scot Free: Justice system in Edinburgh fails cyclists as McCourt appeal refused

25 September 2013
CTC, the national cycling charity, is bitterly dismayed over today's decision of the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh to allow 49-year-old Gary McCourt, whose driving has killed two cyclists, back on the roads.
Family united in disbelief Aileen Brown, Ian Fyfe and Linda Hamilton.

In response to a campaign organised by CTC and Audrey Fyfe's family, over 6,000 people wrote to the Procurator Fiscal against McCourt's 'unduly lenient' sentence. McCourt knocked Audrey off her bike in August 2011 and she died two days later.

He was given just 300 hours community service and a five-year driving ban.

CTC Mountain Bike Park Network

Josh Lowe on Aston Hills 4X
CTC Bike Parks are an exciting cluster of four sites set in glorious landscapes across South-East England. Managed by local volunteer clubs in partnership with CTC, the Bike Parks feature challenging downhill runs, dirt jumps, freeride trails and much more.

All of these sites rely on the enthusiasm, passion and hard work of the Club Committees and volunteers. Your day passes and/or annual membership fees cover the cost of managing and developing these sites, safeguarding the opportunities for mountain biking for now and into the future.

They are all keen to hear from anyone looking to get involved and support their local trails, so feel free to get in touch and keep an eye on the sites' websites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts to find out how you can get involved.

How to survive riding in the rain

Do you dread the weather forecast? Are you a fairweather cyclist, only venturing out if the sky is cloudfree with a gentle breeze blowing? Is the car or bus your preferred choice when rain threatens? Read CTC's guide to cycling in the rain and it might just change your mind.
Cycling in the rain

With the downpours we Brits regularly have to put up with, many people are put off cycling to work. But it is possible to commute by bike and survive all year round with just a little bit of preparation.

“Heavy rain is expected causing hazardous driving conditions” are the words of the weather forecaster that all cyclists dread. “Never mind drivers, what about us!?” you want to yell at the radio as you look out of the window at the threatening clouds.
