Ben is a volunteer with the Boathouse Youth Group in Blackpool. He has been extremely successful in encouraging young people to take up and enjoy a wide range of cycling activities throughout 2010.
Before Easter, Ben had done very little cycling and indeed didn’t even possess a bike. He could in no way be classed as a cyclist.
The Group’s leader was determined to make cycling a core activity and established a Bike Club to bring the benefits of cycling to the young people of South Blackpool.
Ben entered into the spirit of the project and helped extensively during the Easter holidays cycling programme. He worked with the young people on their Bikeability training, on some bike rides in the local area and on a mountain biking trip to a local trail centre.
Ben has been a fantastic example of volunteering at its best. He has made cycling accessible to a group of young people who wouldn’t normally have had any access to the sport and developed his own interest at the same time. He has given his time unstintingly and it has been fantastic to see him develop as a person and young leader over the last year. Cycling has provided the vehicle for this to take place.
