Dr Jonathan Sladden

CTC Campaigning Achievement of the Year 2008 (The Gordon Selway Memorial Award) and Third Place CTC National Volunteer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year for South West England, Dr Jonathan Sladden.

Jonathan’s enthusiasm about cycling and its benefits, never missing an opportunity to promote them - his cycling friends joke that his advice regarding any ailment is to “get out on your bike more often”, but many members of his local club have joined as a result of his health advice!

Over the years he has given up a huge amount of his own time to get the cyclist's voice heard, attending numerous consultation meetings with both the local and County Councils. Jonathan is currently secretary of Bike Somerset, secretary of Cycle Somerset and a CTC Right to Ride representative for Somerset, Taunton and surrounding area, he also works with Taunton Deane Borough Council on their future town strategy plan.

The attribute that stands out the most about Jonathan is his tenacity. He has an unrelenting tireless energy for promoting cycling and seems totally unaffected by the scarcity of victories that is the cycle campaigners’ lot.

Additional achievements that are either in part or totally as a result of Jonathan's unwavering work:

  • A Taunton Trail Cycle Map – produced in association with the local college (SCAT - Somerset College of Arts and Technology) which due to its success and popularity has had to be reprinted / updated at least once since its original release.
  • A Pedestrian / Cycle specific Bridge across the river Tone providing off road access to Hankridge Park, a large shopping development on the outskirts of Taunton.
  • Implementation of a “Take a Stand” scheme that resulted in the installation of cycle stands at a number of businesses and organisations in Taunton which previously had no cycle parking provision.
