Andrew Davies

Volunteer of the Year for West Midlands, Andrew Davies.

Andrew has qualified as a Bikeability instructor and delivers training at our local primary school donating any fees to the school cycling club to purchase parts, where children who have unsafe bikes can have them repaired free of charge. Andrew does this work himself. Alongside the club, he also runs a program that helps children ride without stabilizers. He has given up his time from work to qualify and start the school cycling club.

Last Easter he started bike rides on a Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings for riders of all ages and abilities after placing adverts in the local paper. These rides start from the local secondary school. He then advertised for bikes to be donated so that the school would have a pool of bikes to enable them to have cycling on their curriculum. Most of the bikes had to be repaired which with no budget he would break one bike up to use the parts to repair the others. The school now has 10 bikes to start cycle training.

The school is on the National cycle route 45. Andrew is the liaison volunteer ranger along the route from Bridgnorth to Stourport-on-Severn. He has helped two local secondary schools to become rangers to help with their Duke of Edinburgh award. Andrew has achieved all this after having both his knees operated on in January 2009 which he is still undergoing treatment.
