Simon Geller

Runner-up CTC Campaigning Achievement of the Year for Yorkshire and the Humber, Simon Geller.

Simon is one of the foremost, all-round advocates of cycling in the Sheffield area. Not only does he campaign for better conditions for cycling on the roads and taking bikes on public transport, but he also devotes much energy to introducing people to cycling by way of rides and events.

Being a Right to Ride rep for CTC for several years, he is one of the most active members of cycleSheffield (formerly ‘Pedal Pushers). He was the main organiser of CTC/CCN’s (now Cyclenation's) joint cycle campaign conference hosted by Pedal Pushers in 2003. He is also a member of Cyclenation’s Board. Always keen to use his professional skills as a communication specialist to the advantage of cycle campaigning, he is working on ways to get activists to operate more effectively and efficiently together.

His success as a campaigner may well be due to his ability to work constructively with the organisations he wishes to influence. He helped conduct and collate an extensive survey of cycling facilities linked to Northern Rail’s operations and stations which paved the way to Northern Rail’s exemplary cycle strategy. Simon was recognised for this work at the Association of Train Operating Companies’ (ATOC) Cycle-Rail Awards in 2007, when he shared the highly-commended prize in the ‘People Award’ category.

Another successful outcome of Simon’s positive campaigning methods was the agreement between his campaign group and Sheffield Supertram to run ‘Cyclists Specials’ out from the centre of the city so that cyclists could enjoy both a tram lift and the beauty of the Rother Valley.
