Volunteer of the Year for North West England, Mary Mitchell.

Mary is a registered volunteer for Manchester Events Volunteers, an organisation built from the legacy of the 2002 Commonwealth games and based in the Town Hall in Manchester City Centre. Mary was one of 8 volunteers who registered with the Manchester Champions Project in June 2008 and was the only person to actually come along and see what the Project was all about.

On starting up a summer evening family bike ride at Debdale Park in the East of Manchester, at the first session nobody turned up. The following week, one family to came, the week after another and now there is a great turnout every week: everyone has great fun. Due to the success of the summer evening rides, the park warden is keen to get the sessions in his events book ready for this year as he knows how good they are. Every Saturday morning, Mary helps when 30 to 40 people turn up at the Champions Project and, without her help, the event would not run.
