Cathy Gaulter Carter
Cathy Gaulter Carter of Thame in Oxfordshire chaired: The Thame Walking and Cycling Campaign (formerly Thame Better Ways to School Group). The group wound up in 2007 having achieved many of its goals, principally the completion of the Phoenix Trail cycle path from Princes Risborough to Thame with onward links to Oxford. This was ultimately a Sustrans project but Cathy’s particular contributions to cycling of all kinds deserve recognition.
She was the major campaigner in lobbying the local council to construct: Cycle lanes on busy stretches of roads, the layout of routes especially to schools, cycle parking in the shopping areas and crossing points on busy intersections.
Cathy continues to campaign tirelessly for: for improvements to cycling facilities in the town – parking, cycle lanes, speed limits. She also promotes cycling to school in all 4 schools in the town and organises events for women (especially middle aged ones!) to dust off their bicycles and have a go. She is lobbying to establish a cycle link between Thame and the railway station at Haddenham (across two counties so it is hard to find a ‘sponsor’).
Cathy never accepts ‘second best’ or gives up a fight. She manages to put endless energy into her cycling campaigns on top of working as a supply teacher and caring for her family.
