Steve Swanton - CTC Wantage

From it’s very beginning Steve has been a constant factor within CTC Wantage, with a love for cycling activities and a rare ability to encourage and nurture with his gentle enthusiasm, combined with a vast experience of cycle touring.

Steve was a founder member of CTC Wantage in 1994, and has been an active, diligent, and key part of the club ever since. He has held all possible offices within the committee over this time, including invaluable service as Chairman and Secretary. During his time with the club he has shown complete dedication to the cause of making cycling accessible to all. He has been responsible for a number of new initiatives over the years, including the introduction of a “10 Mile Club” of weekly evening rides specifically tailored to beginners. In April 2010 he was instrumental in advising and assisting in the organisation of the Abingdon Freewheeling Cycling Festival, which again had the specific aim of introducing people to the enjoyment of cycling. The event was a great success with approximately 200 cyclists registering for the graded rides. Steve has held a very active role as a rides leader and events organiser,  and has been solely responsible for encouraging and coaching many CTC Wantage rides leaders over the years.

Steve has also been the key organiser of the annual CTC Wantage hosted  “Mince Pie Ride” to Uffington White Horse Hill. This very popular Christmas event attracts riders from cycling groups across the local area, and has resulted in raising vital funds for the children’s mobility charity “Whizz-Kidz”, with donations collected on the day.

Not just content with such good work at local level, Steve has also played an important part in the committee life of CTC Oxfordshire, where he is  currently serving Secretary.
