The Bike Factory - Chester - Certificate of Commendation
Throughout its existence, it has been a source of inspiration, practical service and financial assistance to the Cyclists’ Touring Club and its members.
The Company’s long-standing connections with CTC were strengthened with the founding of the Chester and North Wales District Association (now Parent Member Group) only seven days before the outbreak of War in 1939. The driving force behind the formation of the DA was the late Mr. Percy Carter who was not only its President for 22 years but was also the manager of Marston’s and later Davies Brothers Cycles. During his time as manager, in 1937, the Company was awarded a silver plaque to mark 25 years unbroken service with Raleigh Industries Ltd.
Throughout its time, the Company has been a steadfast supporter of CTC activities. In recent years, it has sponsored and aided events organised by Chester and North Wales CTC. For example, in 2009, it was particularly generous in its support of the DA’s 70th Anniversary, to which It donated some £800 worth of prizes, and in the following year assisted the Bickerton Challenge Charity Rides which raised over £3430 for Help4Heroes. More recently, Chester and North Wales CTC has reason to be grateful for its provision of financial aid for THE LINK, its quarterly magazine.
The Bike Factory also fosters the sport and pastime of cycling in other ways. It gives assistance to the annual Liverpool to Chester Charity Ride. This popular event gives good exposure and publicity for cycling amongst the general public. The Bike Factory aids other local cycling organisations, including both Chester Road Club and Birkenhead North End CC.
The Company’s involvement in cycling is more than a distant professional one. Its owner, Mr. David Quinn has been a CTC Life Member since the age of 16 and, in addition, many members of its staff are CTC members. It is therefore fitting that, CTC recognises the work of the Bike Factory and its staff, past and present, by awarding this Certificate of Commendation in the 100th year of the Company’s existence.
