Congratulations to those CTC
cyclists who have recently finished the Paris Brest Paris ride. This week, find
out why the Cyclists' Defence Fund is taking the poor state of one particular
road surface very seriously. Cycling doesn't often grace the pages of the
financial press but this week it did. We round up of some of the forthcoming
cycling events from around the country. Plus, soothing flowers and huggable
forests.

Notice served |
The Cyclists’ Defence Fund ( CDF), a charity set up by CTC
to fight legal cases affecting cyclists, has served notice on Sheffield City
Council that it considers
the iconic Strines Moor road to be 'out of repair'. The road has been used in
stages of the Tour of Britain and is likely to feature in Sheffield's proposal
to host part of the Tour de France during 2016. The action has been taken using
the little-known section 56 of the Highways Act 1980, under which anyone can ask
a highway authority to repair a road and where failure to do so can lead to a
magistrates’ court hearing. "This is not a request solely for
cyclists," said CDF trustee Martyn Bolt, "but for the many motor cyclists, and car drivers who also use the
Strines." The council has
four more months to take remedial action or face court. Report the
pothole on your street at Fill That
Hole. | |

Events round-up |
If you’re in or around London on
Sunday and you want to get in touch with your inner hippy, you need to join the
Floral
Bicycle Parade. Slightly further north, entry is now open for the Eastern
and Central Regions Champs Downhill MTB event being held at Aston Hill on Sunday
4th September. More info here.
On Sunday 2 October 2011, Red Bull will be bringing the world’s smallest
velodrome to The Old Fruit Market in Glasgow to challenge fixed gear riders from
across the country. Register at www.redbull.co.uk/minidrome. Make
the most of the longer days by getting out with your local CTC Member Group.

102 years later, cycling is
still here |
Roy Spilsbury, CTC campaigner
and editor of the Cycling North
Wales website, has discovered a 102-year-old photo
showing the residents of Conwy marching to celebrate the arrival of a motor car.
Roy says: “No doubt the bike shop on the right, complete with CTC Winged Wheel
sign, was regarded by some as an anachronism in the new world to come. However,
the local Mercedes showroom has just closed down, with local cycle dealer West
End Cycles moving into the premises and CTC is still going strong!” The humble
bicycle also seems
to be enjoying a renaissance across the Atlantic, although we can’t take credit
for that! | | |

Show me the
money |
A report out this week has
estimated that cycling is worth nearly £3bn to the UK economy,
when you include the taxes paid by the 23,000 people working in the cycling
sector. | | |

How much do you love your
forest? |
On Sunday 11 September, England
will attempt the world record for hugging trees. Delamere Forest in Cheshire
will host the record attempt, with
28 forests around England also hosting mass tree hugs and forest open days. You
can read about CTC’s forest access campaign here. | | |

Congratulations to CTC Volunteer
of the Year 2009 Mark Kiehlmann on launching a 20’s Plenty For Us
campaign and gaining the support of local Council leader, Rhonnda Geekie. In a
good week for cycling in Dunbartonshire, Mark’s cycle co-operative appeared on
live TV, giving the news presenter a lift in their Bullitt
cargo
bike. | | |

Here’s an inspirational video of
the different types of cycling – just for a change, with no men. More internet
goodness, this time spoofing the advertising imagery of cycle clothing
makers Rapha. | | |
