A motoring helmet?

The road users which it appears would benefit most from helmets are car occupants. Unlike cyclists or pedestrians, they are undertaking no strenuous activity and therefore do not suffer the unpleasant sensation of an insulating helmet which increases sweating.

It was to fill this obvious gap in the market that Australian company Davies Craig stepped in. In the 1980s they produced a 'motoring helmet'Motoringhelmet.jpg for all car occupants. CTC owns one.

The helmet comes with a pamphlet which includes helpful suggestions for use:

Davis Craig recommends you wear your Motoring Helmet at all times when motoring but particularly at the following documented high-risk times –

  • After consuming any alcohol.
  • When other drivers are likely to have consumed alcohol especially 4.00 pm to 2.00 am Friday and Saturdays.
  • After dark and during twilight.
  • In rain or when roads are wet.
  • During long trips when you may become tired.
  • Within five kilometres of your home or destination.
  • Christmas, Easter or long weekends.
  • If you are under 25 or over 60.

The instruction manual continues:

You have made a sound decision to purchase your Davies Craig Motoring Helmet. Wear it and don't feel self-conscious. Driving even for the most proficient is dangerous.

Ultimately, motoring helmets will be commonplace, but in the meantime, you will be a leader whilst those who may consider your good sense misplaced, will follow.

Motoring helmets never did become commonplace, and it is a good thing too. If the effects of seatbelt legislation meant that drivers took greater risks on the roads, then imagine what making drivers wear helmets might do.
