The Cyclists' Defence Fund (CDF) was set up by CTC in 2001. Its formation was prompted by the claim of insurer Provident against the parents of nine-year-old cyclist Darren Coombs who was brain damaged when hit by a car. More recently, CDF successfully defended Daniel Cadden, who was charged with 'inconsiderate cycling' because he chose to cycle downhill about 1m from the edge of the road, a position which meant that drivers behind him were either delayed, or had to cross the central solid white line illegally in order to overtake him.
Originally set up to provide support for cyclists in key legal actions, its aims and activities have now been widened (although they are still focussed on cycling and the law), and it has now been set up as a registered charity independent of CTC (charity number 1108037).
The Fund's website also has pages explaining how you can seek support from the Fund, or how you can make donations or volunteer to help the Fund. In particular, the Fund is keen to recruit people with legal expertise to act as a panel of reference.

The CDF is primarily funded by donations from CTC members and cyclists. To donate, please visit their website.
