Birthday Rides

What are the Birthday Rides?

In the 1970s CTC decided to run a week-long cycling holiday as a build up to a big celebration on our centenary in 1978. The idea was such a success that it has kept going ever since and become one of CTC's flagship events.

Each year, anything from a few hundred to over a thousand cyclists gather for a week of cycling and other social activities. The event is based at a fixed centre with the venue moving around the country each year. Whilst the rides always used to take place during the week which included the 5th August - the actual date on which CTC was founded at a cyclists' meet in Harrogate, Yorkshire - this is no longer the case. Finding suitable venues is a hard job without the added burden of date inflexibility.  However, whatever the week chosen, on one of the days there is an organised tea party where CTC's original birth date is celebrated.

Moving around the country as they do, the rides provide a perfect showcase for the local organising group to show off their region and its best rides. Volunteer group members plan rides for each day, from short family jaunts to demanding challenges, and the routes themselves become a permanent legacy of the week available normally anytime afterwards from the Touring Department at CTC's National Office.

This year’s Birthday Rides will be based on the south coast of Cornwall, near Falmouth. There will be rides to view Cornwall's spectacular coastline, to quaint fishing harbours, historic properties and some surprisingly remote inland areas.

The social programme will include a beach barbecue and optional boat trips around Falmouth's estuary, while the Birthday Tea will take place at Pendennis Castle.

Accommodation will be half-board or self-catering in three-star en suite flats at the combined universities of Cornwall at Tremough Campus. Camping will be available at nearby Penryn Rugby Club.

Full details are available on the CTC Holidays & Tours website or go to www.ctcbirthdayrides.org; or phone 01483 238300 for a paper copy. You can also email br@ctc.org.uk

The Birthday Rides this year took place in Dumfries & Galloway and celebrated the life and work of Kirkpatrick Macmillan, inventor of the pedal bicycle. Dumfries and Galloway College played host to the event providing a campsite, a refectory, space for social activities and children’s games as well as a welcoming atmosphere for over 500 cyclists....

he Festival took place on the very last weekend of July and this year we played host to the “Birthday Rides”, the CTC’s annual jamboree of cycling (which commemorates and celebrates the founding of the CTC in 1878)....

Although many of the committee of Manchester DA were sceptical about organising the Birthday Rides in just 10 months, enough of us were enthusiastic enough to take it on. Thornbridge Outdoor Centre, at Great Longstone in Derbyshire had been used in 2003 by the Tandem Club for their National Rally, and seemed an excellent choice....
